Common Problems with Laser Technology Machines

Black Streaks, Shadows, And Ghosting

• Adjust the printer’s lightness/darkness setting to 2-3 different variables and see if the problem disappears.
• Look at the fusing assembly - is the roller torn (warning: this part is very hot) or does it have any black buildup?
• If you are having trouble with envelopes, turn the density to a darker setting.
• Low humidity levels can cause print quality.

White Streaks Or Voids (Vertical)

• Dirty printer-mirror or transfer wire needs to be cleaned.
• Did you forget to pull out the sealing tape in your new toner?

Skipping

• Are there any “clicking” noises when you print? You could have a broken gear.

Chip Error

• The machine does not recognize the toner cartridge. Turn off the machine and unplug it for 5 minutes. Then restart the machine. If it still does not recognize the cartridge or says “Toner Low” the cartridge may need to be replaced.

Common Problems with Fax Machines that use Laser Technology

Fax machines that use Laser Technology may share the same problems described above but have one additional element (scanner window) that may cause problems.

Black Streaks, Black Vertical Line

• The scanning glass on your fax machine is dirty. This could be due to white out, tape, or just plain dirt. Clean thoroughly.

Common Problems with Copiers

Black Marks Or Spots On Page (Always Same Place)

• Clean the glass on the machine.
• Change the lightness/darkness setting - some copiers have 2 different density.

White Streaks Or Voids

• Dirty transfer wire or mirror. Check your manual how to clean these.
• Did you forget to pull out the sealing tape in your new toner?

Black Smudges / Vertical Or Horizontal, Also Ghosting

• The fusing assembly may be old or torn.

Common Problems with Inkjet Technology Machines

Horizontal Streaks Through Text And Images

• Remove the ink cartridge and check to see if there is any fuzz or debris on the bottom of the cartridge - if so clean it off - it’s possibly dragging across the ink while it’s still wet. Take a look at the bottom of the carriage, which holds your ink cartridge(s). There may be fuzz and lint stuck to the bottom of the carriage.

White Streaks Or Voids

• Remove the ink cartridge(s), and apply a small amount of water or alcohol to a tissue (preferably lint free), and clean the bottom of the cartridge, then run several test pages and see if the problem clears up.

Printhead Cleaning Tip: Remove the cartridge with printhead or the printhead assembly from printer. Take a lint-free cloth or paper towel and lightly dampen with warm, distilled water. Fold the towel in half twice and hold in the fingers of one hand. With your other hand, gently “Blot” the cartridge by pressing the printhead into the towel a few times. (The printhead is the bottom of the cartridge where the ink is jetted onto your paper). This will help to remove dried ink on the surface of the printhead. A good “Blot” should show a uniform, solid ink pattern (from each chamber) on towel.

Common Problems with Ribbon Technology

White Voids Through Characters Or Text

• Pull the ribbon out and look at the printhead for debris on it. A small brush or can of air is best.

Black Streaks Through Text, Or Text Too Dark

• Adjust the distance between the printhead and the platen farther apart (usually a lever).

Light Text Or Characters

• Adjust the distance between the printhead and the platen to a closer position (usually a lever).
